Aion

01.01.2009

Spread your wings and fight for your people. This is a violent game, which is not recommended for children.

“Aion” is a breath of fresh air in the MMO (massive multiplayer online) genre. The storyline is exciting from the beginning, the graphics are striking and the music is very special. “Aion” gives you the choice between playing as Asmodians or Elyos. Asmodians are the ones living on the shadow side of the split planet. They have a wolfish look, are more aggressive and show signs of their lack of sunshine. Elyos look more like people. They live on the light side. With their white wings and blond hair they see themselves as better than their counterparts. The hatred is, of course, boiling on both sides.

The story starts out with a little video clip showing a war, at the same time as a voice explains that you must fight for your people for the rest of your life. After this you wake up, and the game commences. To begin with, you get some easy missions, and a beginners guide tells you how to play. If you’ve played “World of Warcraft” or other MMO-games before there is nothing new here, but if this is your first meeting with the genre you should take time to read through the guide. As you complete missions you get increasingly higher level and more attacks to make use of. On level 10 you get wings and some missions that require flying, and this gives a whole new experience in this type of role-play.

The game has to be played online, and it has a lot of system demands for your PC. The family machine from 2005 is no good, and the cheapest Internet connection won’t do either. There is also occasionally a long waiting time to gain access to the server in the afternoon, which is very frustrating. If you loose your connection for only a short moment, you risk having to wait three hours in line to be able to play again. Also, “Aion” is a game you have to pay for on a monthly basis. This means you have to be able to pay by VISA or with “Game Time Cards,” which you can buy in shops.

Child suitability:
“Aion” has very good graphics. The game is mainly about warfare, and the violence is at times very detailed. All communication in the game should according to the rules on the server be in English, and you can be thrown off the server if you don’t follow the rules. The game probably carries, like most MMO-games, a chance of addiction. This is a factor parents should take into consideration if they let their children play Aion or any other form of MMO.
